Introduction Mystery is a fairly new area of writing for Mike, though it has become a most attractive one. Mike first ventured into mystery with the Victorian detectuve Inspector George Trevelyan, co-created by Jen Downes. The first compeletd story, The Vicar of Sexton's Deep, found a hoke with Black Beacon Book of Mystery, and was subsequently reprinted in Black Cat Weekly. From there, Mike moved into Sherlock Holmes, the first story being a crossover witnh Inspector Trevelyan, which was piked up for publication several years ago but remains in limbo fro complicated reasons. Since that time (2019), Sherlock Holmes has become Mike's most active area of mystery writing, with 23 stories plus a novel completed at this time, and plenty more to come, appearing in Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine, Sherlock Holmes Mystery Magazine, Strand Magazine and anthologies from Belenager Books and MX. Click here to go to the Sherlock Holmes page for a complete listing, links, covers, and an essay on the topic. Inspector Trevelyan has also gained some traction, there are now eight stories on paper, two of which are crossovers with Sherlcok Holmes and three of which have been published at this time. This series will see many more instalments! A distinction can be made between mystery and crime, the former concerning the investigation of crime after the fact, while the latter concerns the committing of crime in the first place. In the latter category, Mike has a number of stories which intersect neatly with other genres. Two are ghost/horror pieces (also listed on the horror page) and the others are science fiction with a criminal theme, such as a number of his Tales of the Middle Stars (which also feature on the focused Middle Stars page.
