Caveat
Sherlock Holmes is in the public domain, as are the works of H.P. Lovecraft and Alexander Dumas. However, freshly-created, original fiction is the copyright of the author. Note that my work adresses adult themes, and is therefore not recommended for YA or children.

Introduction

Historical stories are often difficult to define as they intersect naturally with other genres, such as adventure or romance, even horror. Mike would contend that there is perhaps no such as thing as a pure historical story, as history provides essentially a scenario against which story events (which fall into other genres) play out. This is certainly an interesting point for debate! Sherlock Holmes is historical fiction, set in late Victorian times, which oblige the writer to do diligent research, however the stories function as mystery with a dash of adventure — this is the perfect example of the difficulty in assigning any story to a purely historical category.

Listed below are a range of stories which embrace history in one sense or another, some of which are cross-listed from other genres.
